Sessions run 30 to 45 minutes at our private studio at Jack London Square in Oakland — easy off I-880 and I-580, walkable from 12th Street BART, a straight shot across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco.
The studio is purpose-built for professional headshot photography. Professional strobe lighting, multiple backdrop options, and a tethered camera system that shows every shot on a monitor in real time as the session moves forward. You see what is working immediately — no guessing, no waiting weeks to find out the photos didn't turn out.
Every shot is fully directed. Posture, expression, chin angle, shoulder position, what to do with your hands — none of it is left to you to figure out. Most men who book a session have never had a professional headshot taken before and are not entirely comfortable in front of a camera. That is not a problem. The direction is designed specifically to get natural, confident, professional results from people who are not models and have never done this before.

What to Wear for a Men's Headshot
What you wear is the single biggest variable you control going into a session. The right outfit makes everything easier — the lighting works better, the background choices open up, and the overall image reads as more polished and intentional.
What works best:
Solid colors in classic, professional tones. Navy, charcoal, dark gray, forest green, burgundy, and deep teal all photograph exceptionally well. These colors are flattering across a wide range of skin tones and read as professional without being stiff.
A blazer or sport coat. Even if you never wear one in your day-to-day, a blazer over a simple shirt adds visual structure and signals professionalism in the frame. You can always loosen it up once we see how the shots look — but starting with the blazer gives you more options.
A well-fitted dress shirt — with or without a tie. Fits matter more on camera than in person. A shirt that fits well reads as sharp. A shirt that is too loose or too fitted reads as off even if it looks fine in a mirror.
What to avoid:
Bright white shirts. White tends to blow out under studio lighting and competes with your face for the viewer's attention. Off-white, cream, and light gray are better alternatives.
Busy patterns. Plaid, pinstripes, bold checks, and graphic prints are all distracting in a headshot — the eye goes to the pattern instead of your face.
Logos and branded clothing. A company logo or sport brand on your shirt pulls the eye and dates the image. Clean, unbranded clothing keeps the focus on you.
Bring options. Two to three outfits give you flexibility during the session and more choices when your proofing gallery arrives. Most men who bring options are glad they did.
