Therapist Headshots Bay Area
For therapists, the headshot is not a formality. It is the first thing a prospective client sees — often before they read a single word of your bio. On Psychology Today, Zencare, Zocdoc, or your private practice website, your photo is making an impression before you ever meet. For someone in a vulnerable moment, deciding whether to reach out to a stranger for help, that impression matters enormously.
Erin McQueen, an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) specializing in grief, life transitions, and serious illness, found Camerawerkz while searching for Psychology Today headshots online. She had never had a professional headshot taken before. She came to our Jack London Square studio in Oakland, and left with a set of images that communicated exactly what a therapist's headshot needs to communicate — warmth, approachability, and the kind of quiet confidence that makes a prospective client feel safe before the first session is ever scheduled.
That is what every therapist headshot session at Camerawerkz is built to deliver.

What a Therapist Headshot Session Looks Like
Solo sessions run 30 to 45 minutes at our private studio at Jack London Square in Oakland — accessible from across the Bay Area, easy off the Bay Bridge, BART-friendly from 12th Street Oakland.
The studio is purpose-built for professional photography. Professional strobe lighting, multiple backdrop options, and a tethered camera system that shows each shot on a monitor in real time throughout the session. Every shot is fully directed — posture, expression, chin angle, energy.
Nothing is left to figure out on your own.
For a therapist's headshot, the direction is calibrated specifically to what those images need to do. Warmth without being casual. Confidence without being cold. Approachability that makes a prospective client feel like they can trust you before they ever send a message. That balance is achieved through direction, not luck — and it is the same direction we apply to every mental health professional we photograph.
Many therapists, like Erin, have never had a professional headshot taken before. That is exactly why the directing side of the session matters as much as the lighting and the lens. You do not need photography experience. You just need to show up.

Where Therapists Use Their Headshots
Bay Area therapists appear on more platforms than almost any other solo professional. Your headshot needs to work consistently across all of them — and a professional image on every platform builds the kind of trust that converts a profile visitor into a client.
Platforms where your therapist headshot will appear:
-
Psychology Today therapist directory
-
Zencare therapist directory
-
Zocdoc provider profile
-
Headway and other insurance-based directories
-
Your private practice website
-
SimplePractice and other practice management platforms
-
LinkedIn professional profile
-
Alma provider directory
-
TherapyDen and specialty directories
-
Google Business Profile
-
Press and media coverage
-
Speaking engagement profiles and conference bios
A headshot that is inconsistent across platforms — different lighting, different crops, different quality — signals inconsistency to the prospective client who is researching you. A single professional image used consistently across every platform builds the cohesive, trustworthy presence that attracts the clients you want to work with.

Therapist Headshot FAQ
Do I need photography experience?
None at all. The session is fully directed. We walk you through posture, expression, and angle in real time. Therapists who have never been in front of a professional camera consistently get their best results — the direction exists so you do not have to figure anything out on your own.
What should I wear for a therapist headshot?
Solid colors in warm, approachable tones photograph best — soft blues, warm grays, forest green, burgundy, mauve. Avoid busy patterns and bright white. Most therapists shoot in what they would wear to a session with a client — professional but not stiff. Bring two to three options if you want variety in your proofing gallery.
How is a therapist headshot different from a corporate headshot?
The goal is different. A corporate headshot communicates authority and competence. A therapist's headshot needs to communicate warmth and approachability first, with credibility underneath. The directing we apply is calibrated to that balance — the lighting, backdrop, and expression direction are all adjusted to produce images that feel safe and welcoming rather than formal.
How long does the session take? 30 to 45 minutes.
Most therapists cover two to three looks — different expressions and a backdrop or two — so there are real choices when the proofing gallery arrives.
How quickly will I get my images?
Proofing gallery within 2 to 3 business days. Final professionally edited images within 1 to 2 weeks. Rush delivery available for directory submission deadlines or website launches.
What size do Psychology Today and Zencare require for profile photos? Psychology Today recommends a square image at minimum 200x200 pixels, though higher resolution is always better for quality. Zencare recommends at minimum 400x400 pixels. We deliver web-optimized files sized and formatted for all major therapy directories alongside your high-resolution files.
Do you photograph therapists at their office?
For individual sessions, our Jack London Square studio delivers the most consistent, professional results. For group practices that need headshots across a full team, we bring a complete mobile studio to your Bay Area practice — all we need is a room and a power outlet.
